The Relationship Between sRGB, DCI-P3, and NTSC Color Gamuts. — Rogin High Brightness Solution
Latest company news about The Relationship Between sRGB, DCI-P3, and NTSC Color Gamuts. — Rogin High Brightness Solution

All three are standards for color coverage; the higher the value, the richer the range of displayable colors. Coverage order: NTSC > DCI-P3 > sRGB.

1. Respective Positioning and Use Cases
1) sRGB (Universal standard for computers and the web)
Applications: Windows PCs, mobile web, office work, image-based social media, printing, and the default color space for the vast majority of games.
Industry Benchmark: Standard for monitors; universal for design, video editing, and online content distribution.
Gamut Size: Smallest.
2) DCI-P3 (Wide color gamut for cinema and film/video)
Applications: Theatrical films, color grading for short-form video and film, high-end smartphones, gaming monitors, and displays for watching movies.
Essence: Significantly expands the red and green ranges compared to sRGB, resulting in more vivid and clear cinematic visuals.
Size: Gamut area is approximately 25% larger than sRGB.

3) NTSC (Legacy TV broadcasting standard)
Applications: Early analog television and older video footage; currently used primarily as a reference for color gamut conversion.
Largest range; covers the widest overall color spectrum.

2. Standard Conversion Ratios (Fixed industry-standard ratios)
100% sRGB ≈ 72% NTSC
100% DCI-P3 ≈ 96% NTSC
100% DCI-P3 ≈ 125% sRGB
Quick Reference:
72% NTSC = Full sRGB
96% NTSC = Full P3

3. Visual Range Comparison
sRGB: The "safe" baseline; perfectly compatible with all devices, avoiding oversaturation or color shifts. The top choice for graphic design, office work, and online publishing.

4. DCI-P3: A wide color gamut specific to the film and video industry; offers a superior visual experience for watching movies, editing video, and streaming shows. Note: Without proper color management in Windows, a full-P3 display may make colors appear overly vivid or reddish.
NTSC: Rarely used as an active color space today; serves mainly as a reference unit for manufacturer specifications. Do not use NTSC as a standard for color grading. 4. How to interpret monitor specifications
For general office work, drafting, or creating e-commerce graphics: 100% sRGB is sufficient; it ensures accurate colors without issues.
For frequent 4K movie watching, short-form video editing, or playing AAA single-player games: Prioritize 90%–100% DCI-P3 coverage.
Note that a "100% NTSC" rating is often a misleading figure; the actual equivalent gamut far exceeds P3, and standard devices cannot fully display it.

5. Additional context regarding the VA panels mentioned earlier
VA panels offer superior contrast; high-end HVA panels typically achieve over 95% DCI-P3 and 100% sRGB, providing a dual advantage of deep black levels for movies and a wide color gamut.
IPS panels generally offer better color accuracy; professional design monitors strictly target 100% sRGB, whereas IPS panels intended for film and video production are the ones that boost P3 coverage.
